David
Ariel Abouav
Location: Mountain View,
California, USA
Email: DAbouav@yahoo.com
I
am an engineer and live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my wife
Jenny. My parents are Dan and Doris Abouav. Dan grew up in Haifa,
Israel, and Doris grew up in Santiago, Chile. Her parents are Ernest
and Ursula Schwarcz. Dan works in the computer industry and Doris works
in real estate. I have an older brother named Michael, who also lives
and works in the Bay Area. My wife is a social worker and works with
developmentally delayed children and young adults.
My father's parents are Chaim and Judith Abouav (both deceased). They
lived in Haifa, Israel for much of their lives. Chaim's father, Michael
Abouav, was born in 1889 in Melas, Turkey and met his wife, Mary
(Miriam) Joseph, in Ezmir, Turkey in 1910. Michael's family immigrated
several generations before from Spain. Michael used to spell his last
name "Abouaf", until he met some people from Safed who told him that it
was actually spelled "Abouav". They told him that the spelling Abouaf
came from the spelling in Turkish, as the old Turkish Alphabet did not
have a symbol for the sound "v".
Chaim was born in 1914 and grew up in Turkey until he was 7. Chaim and
his family (brother Jacob and sister Sara) then moved to Egypt for a
couple of months, and then to British Palestine. Chaim met Judith Azoff
in Haifa and they married. Their two children are Dan Abouav (my
father) and David Abouav (my uncle). My uncle David lives in Melbourne,
Australia.
Chaim's brother, Jacob Abouav, married a woman named Hana and lived in
the Bay Area as well. He was a successful and well known heart surgeon.
Unfortunately, Jacob died in 1991 from a heart attack. He and Hana had
three children, Leora, Amnon, and Erela, who all live in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Leora is married to David Zilberman and has 2 sons,
Shai and Eitan. Erela has one daughter, Angela, and is married to Mike
Collins.
Chaim's sister, Sara Abouav, married Joseph Laniado and lives in Israel
near Haifa. They have a daughter Amalia and a son Isaac. Joseph died in
2006.

I am the brother of David, the brilliant author of this website.
Being an Abouav is great, although I can no longer shop as Safeway
because they take so long to figure out how to say my last name (i.e.
"Thank you Mr. Abooooouuuuuhhhhav) that it has made me chronically
late. I live and work in the silicon valley, which I highly
reccommend. Single, no kids, but my mom (Doris) is hard at work
setting me up with all of those "nice jewish girls" out there.

My great great grandparents were Haim and Rebecca Abouaf (Rebecca's
maiden name was Carmona). I don't know how many children they
had, but their daughter, Bolissa/Behora, was my great
grandmother. She was born in Smyrna (now Izmir) Turkey around
1868.
Bolissa married Gershon (Behor) Algranati around 1890 and they lived in
Izmir where they had 7, perhaps 8, children.
Most of the family, including Gershon, Bolissa and my grandmother,
immigrated to the USA in 1920.

Jeremy Aboab-Leidstar
Location: Asuncion -Paraguay
Email: jeremyyal@mixmailt
ola,hello, I am 60 years old, unmarried,
no
living relatives, and living at present in Paraguay. Totally fascinated
to discover this site ( on 12th June 2003 ).
My mother was a Sasportas Aboab-Leidstar born in Istanbul but
left with her parents for New Zealand when she was 4 years old ( 1913 )
due to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, from there she later went to
study in Belgium where she married my father, a British national from
the Barbados community, moving to live in Italy ( near Messina ) in
1933. I was born in the UK where my mother had taken refuge, but we
left for Brazil ( Rio de Janeiro ) in 1943. My father joined us in 1946
and we eventually settled in the state of Minas Gerais ( near Sabara ).
In 1960 my family left Brazil settling in Portugal, moving on from
there two years later. My father died in Tokyo in 1975 and my mother in
Mexico City in 1979.
I studied in Lisbon, Portugal ( 1960-62 ) in Milan, Italy( 1962-64 )and
in Amsterdam, Netherlands ( 1964-67 ) then lived in the Azores,
France and Portugal, coming to Paraguay five years ago and hope to live
again in Brazil as soon as possible. I am a painter.
My maternal grandparents were Hugo Sasportas Aboab-Leidstar born in
Paris, but the family had lived continuously in Izmir after settling in
Turkey from Amsterdam ( Aboab ) and Stockholm ( Leidstar ) in 1700,
later constituting there a dynasty of diplomats representing Holland
and Sweden, but leaving about 1870 for Budapest then Paris, and
Violette Deller born in Corfu, where her grandfather had settled from
Poland while her mother's family had lived on the island since the
first dispersion. My grandfather died in Athens in 1932. I would enjoy
greatly communicating with anyone Aboab/and all its variations, so
really hope to hear from somebody, pode escrever em portugues se
quiser, je mag in het Nederlands schrijven als je wil, vous pouvez bien
ecrire en francais si vous voulez, si puo scrivere in italiano se vuole
etc.,etc.....my best wishes to you all, Jeremy Aboab-Leidstar
